Space is a specialized architectural monthly which was first published in 1966 and has been at the vanguard of covering the arts and culture scene here in Korea ever since. The magazine features not only architecture, but also diverse cultural and artistic activities across the spectrum of the fine arts. Space offers its readers a wide variety of architectural news throughout Korea, in Asia, and the world in general. A Mediator Embracing Reality: GUBO Architects + Hong Jihak 현실을 끌어안는 조정자: 구보건축 + 홍지학 • Pursuing one's ideals while embracing and overcoming limitations; this is what gradually expands the boundaries of architecture. This FRAME feature examines four recent works by GUBO Architects, which have been created over the past decade informed by this conviction. To closely examine how Cho Yoonhee and Hong Jihak navigate struggle, negotiation, and compromise in their work, Lee Sojin (principal, Leeon Architects) and Lee Joongwon (professor, Sungkyunkwan University), who have long been in dialogue with them, also joined the discussion. This critical conversation - ranging from use of materials, form, structure, and construction to how the office is run - ultimately converges on a sincere commitment to pursue better architecture even within the constraints of the imperfect systems in which architecture is produced.이상을 추구하면서도 현실의 한계를 수용하고 극복하며 좋은 건축의 한계치를 조금씩 넓혀가는 것. 이번 프레임은 이러한 신념 아래 10년 동안 꾸준히 작업해온 구보건축의 근작을 다룬다. 조윤희와 홍지학이 투쟁, 조정, 타협을 거쳐 작업해나가는 과정을 면밀하게 톺아보고자, 이들과 오래 교류해온 이소진(건축사사무소 리옹 대표)과 이중원(성균관대학교 교수)이 함께했다. 재료와 형태, 구조와 시공부터 사무소 운영 방식까지 아우르는 비평적 대화는 ‘건축이 생산되는 불완전한 시스템 속에서도 더 나은 건축을 향해 나아가겠다’는 진심으로 수렴된다.

여기에는 다양한 감정이 있다 This Prompts a Range of Emotions • 정치적 결탁부터 모더니즘에 대한 비약까지, 그간 토마스 헤더윅(헤더윅스튜디오 디렉터, 이하 헤더윅)은 여러 논의를 촉발해왔다. 그리고 헤더윅의 지휘 아래 열린 제5회 서울도시건축비엔날레(「SPACE(공간)」 696호 참고) 주제전은 그간의 논의에 또다시 불을 지폈다. 그는 열린송현녹지광장의 입구에 자신이 작업한 ‘휴머나이즈 월’을 압도적인 크기로 세우고, 이와 마주한 스물네 개의 ‘일상의 벽’은 100배 이상 작은 규모로 배치했다. 한편 그에 따르면, 이곳에 전시된 입체적인 입면들은 르 코르뷔지에의 ‘따분한’ 작업과 상반된다. 이러한 맥락 속에서 작가로 참여한 정이삭(동양대학교 교수), 일상의 벽의 주제와 형식을 차용해 인스타그램에서 ‘K-일상의 벽 챌린지’를 기획한 전재우(하이퍼스팬드럴 대표)를 만나 주제전과 이를 경유한 각자의 작업에 대해 들어본다. 여기에는 비판도, 긍정도, 질투도, 유머도 있다.From accusations of political collusion to sweeping interpretations of modernism, Thomas Heatherwick (director, Heatherwick Studio; hereinafter Heatherwick) has long courted controversy. Under his direction, the Thematic Exhibition of the 5th Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism (covered in SPACE No. 696) has once again fueled debate. At the entrance to Songhyeon Green Plaza, he installed his ‘Humanise Wall’ on an overwhelming scale, while the twenty-four ‘Walls of Public Life’ placed opposite it were at more than one-hundredth of its size.
