THE LAST LAUGH

National Geographic Kids (AU/NZ)

THE FIRST SETTLEMENTS • Early humans were often on the move. They lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, hunting for meat and gathering wild plants to eat. These people lived in small groups and moved to new locations to find food as the seasons changed.

WHAT MAKES A CIVILISATION? • If you've ever been on a long camping trip, you might talk about ‘getting back to civilisation’. But what exactly is a civilisation? Historians define a civilisation as a group of people that farms the land, builds and inhabits cities, has a social hierarchy and is ruled by some form of government.

TECH AND INNOVATION • We have come a long way from the simple stone and bone tools that our ancient ancestors used. Human history has been an extensive journey of discovery and innovation. Over the millennia, we have made huge advances, creating technologies that have changed the course of human history.

FROM HUNTERS TO FARMERS • About 7 million years ago, a branch on the ‘tree of life’ split in two. The ape-like mammals on this branch would eventually evolve into two different groups. One became the chimpanzees and bonobos that live in Africa today. And as for the other, well… that's how humans got their start! Read on to discover how Homo sapiens went from hunter-gatherers to farmers, creating cultures and civilisations across the globe…
